 2023 Preview

Catholic completed the 2022 season with a 13-1 record. The Knights cruised through the regular season with a perfect 10-0 record going into the post season. Last year Catholic captured the region two title and a number one seed in the Class 4A playoffs. They finished region play with a 7-0 record. Catholic made a nice playoff run in 2022, reaching the semi-finals before falling to a very good Andalusia team by the score of 29-26.

No team at Catholic ever won more games in a season than the thirteen victories last year. The 700 points scored by the Knights last year were a team record in a single season.

The high-scoring Catholic Montgomery offense ranked 1st in the AHSAA. They averaged 50.0 points a game.

The Knights defense dominated most opponents as they ranked 13th in the AHSAA. The defense gave up just 11.6 points a game.

Over the past two seasons the Knights have Finished 26-2 and will be looking to continue that winning tradition. Since 2010, Catholic has gone a combined 93-57. Their 62.0% winning percentage ranks 16th in Class 4A over the past thirteen seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, Catholic has managed to compile a record of 139-133. Their 51.0% winning percentage ranks 28th in Class 4A and 179th in the AHSAA.

The Knights are led by head coach Kirk Johnson who is entering his third season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 26-2 over the past two seasons at Catholic. Under his direction the Knights have qualified for the playoffs a total of two times. They have won two region crowns with Coach Johnson.

The Knights have been the best offensive team in the state the last few seasons and we do not look for that to change much in 2023. They will be explosive on offense and could finally make that much anticipated trip to the Super Seven this December.

The Knights enter the 2023 season riding a 24 game regular season winning streak. Catholic has won 24 consecutive region games.

While most teams rebuild during the off season, Catholic has been a consistent winner the past few years and will simply reload this season. The Knights are considered one of the favorites for the region two championship this season and a home game in the first round of the playoffs. Don't be surprised if the Knights are making another deep run into the playoffs. The Knights have successfully qualified for the playoffs every year since 2015 and expect to be included again when November rolls around.

QB Caleb McCreary will be returning after completing 134 of 220 passes for 2,809 yards last season along with 43 touchdowns.

McCreary also rushed for another 802 yards and scored 10 TDs.

The defense will be led by Damien Rankins this season after collecting 80 total tackles last season.

The Knights open the 2023 season on the road against non-region opponent McGill-Toolen on Friday, August 25 at Lipscomb Park. Last year the McGill-Toolen Yellow Jackets finished with an overall record of 5-5 and in fifth place in Class 6A region one. The Yellow Jackets closed out the regular season with a loss to Saraland by a score of 48-31.

Catholic and McGill-Toolen have met a total of 2 times on the football field. The Knights have a 2-0-0 record against the Yellow Jackets. They last met in 2022 with Catholic winning by a score of 42-21.

The Knights lost a ton of talent to graduation off the 2022 squad. Replacing these players will be a key to another successful season. Catholic lost 4A All-State  running back Jeremiah Cobb to graduation. He was named to the first team last season. Also graduating were teammates receiver Luke Harkless, defensive back LJ Green, punter Gabe Russo and defensive lineman Zach Underwood.

The Knights return 4A All-State Senior athlete Caleb McCreary. He was named to the first team last season.
